About PEM Format
PEM (Privacy-Enhanced Mail) is a Base64 encoded format for storing cryptographic keys and certificates. The format includes header/footer markers and is commonly used in SSL/TLS configurations, SSH keys, and X.509 certificates.
- Standard line length is 64 characters (RFC 7468)
- Some systems use 76 characters (RFC 2045 MIME)
- Headers and footers identify the content type
- Normalizing fixes common formatting issues
- All processing happens locally in your browser
